Fame is not a scientific measurement. This unranked selection treats a body of water as famous when it has exceptional physical importance, a wide cultural reach or an instantly recognizable place in world geography. It crosses oceans, seas, lakes and rivers rather than comparing unlike waters by size.

Each entry explains the physical reason the water body stands out. Superlatives use a stated category, because the largest ocean, deepest lake and longest river describe different measurements. Boundaries and river-length rankings can vary with mapping definitions.

1. Pacific Ocean

The Pacific Ocean is Earth’s largest and deepest ocean basin. NOAA places it between Asia and Australia on one side and the Americas on the other, extending from the Arctic toward the Southern Ocean.

2. Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean separates the Americas from Europe and Africa. It is narrower than the Pacific, yet its shipping routes and heat-carrying currents have given it an outsized role in climate, migration and commerce.

3. Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean lies mainly between Africa, Asia and Australia. It is the third-largest named ocean and the only one bounded by the Asian landmass across most of its northern edge.

Seasonally reversing monsoon winds influence currents across its northern waters. Its major routes connect the Persian Gulf and Red Sea with South Asia, East Africa and the Pacific approaches.

4. Arctic Ocean

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the five named oceans. The National Snow and Ice Data Center documents how sea ice expands in winter and retreats in summer.

Canada, Greenland, Russia, Norway and the United States surround the basin. Its low-salinity surface reflects river inflow, ice processes and restricted exchange with lower-latitude oceans.

5. Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea lies between Europe, Africa and Asia and connects to the Atlantic through the Strait of Gibraltar. Narrow straits and a nearly enclosed setting distinguish it from an open ocean margin.

Its shores supported many ancient maritime societies. Modern evaporation exceeds freshwater input, helping create relatively salty water that flows out at depth while Atlantic water enters near the surface.

6. Caribbean Sea

The Caribbean occupies the tropical Atlantic between Central America, northern South America and the Antilles. Warm water, island arcs and extensive coral habitats make its outline familiar far beyond the region.

It also contains the Cayman Trough, one of the deepest parts of the Atlantic realm. Hurricanes can cross the sea while gaining energy from warm upper-ocean water.

7. Red Sea

The Red Sea is a long, narrow basin between northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It connects to the Gulf of Aden through Bab el-Mandeb and reaches the Mediterranean through the human-made Suez Canal.

High evaporation and limited river input contribute to warm, salty water. The basin follows an active rift where the African and Arabian plates are moving apart.

8. Gulf of Mexico

The Gulf of Mexico is a large marginal sea of the Atlantic bordered by the United States, Mexico and Cuba. The Mississippi River delivers water and sediment to its northern shelf.

Warm flow leaving through the Florida Straits feeds the Gulf Stream system. The gulf also supports major fisheries, ports and offshore energy infrastructure while facing hurricanes and coastal pollution.

9. Caspian Sea

The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest enclosed inland body of water by surface area. Despite its name, it has no natural outlet to the ocean and is bordered by five countries.

Its water is saline, though generally less salty than the open ocean and salinity varies across the basin. Water level changes reflect inflow, evaporation and climate rather than ocean tides.

10. Lake Baikal

Russia’s Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest lake and holds the largest volume of unfrozen surface fresh water in a single lake. It occupies an active continental rift in Siberia.

11. Lake Superior

Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake by surface area when Michigan and Huron are treated as separate named lakes. It is the uppermost Great Lake in the main water-flow sequence.

12. Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake by area and the world’s largest tropical lake. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda share its shoreline and the Victoria Nile drains northward from it.

The lake is broad but comparatively shallow for its size. Fisheries support millions of people around the basin, while nutrient pollution and invasive species have altered its ecology.

13. Dead Sea

The Dead Sea occupies the Jordan Rift Valley between Jordan and the West Bank and Israel. NASA Earth Observatory documents the shrinking lake. Its shoreline is Earth’s lowest exposed natural land surface, although its elevation keeps falling and any figure should be dated.

Extreme salinity prevents fish and most larger aquatic life from living there. River diversion and mineral extraction have contributed to a rapid decline in level, so any elevation should carry a date.

14. Nile River

The Nile flows north through northeastern Africa to the Mediterranean. Its White Nile and Blue Nile systems join at Khartoum, linking equatorial and Ethiopian headwaters to an arid lower valley.

15. Amazon River

The Amazon carries more water to the ocean than any other river. It drains an enormous tropical basin and enters the Atlantic through a broad network of channels and estuarine waters.

16. Mississippi River

The Mississippi River forms the central trunk of a drainage network spanning much of the continental United States. It flows from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico and receives the Missouri and Ohio rivers.

Levees, navigation structures and flood-control works have heavily modified its lower course. Sediment delivery helped build the delta, while reduced deposition contributes to coastal land loss.

17. Yangtze River

The Yangtze is Asia’s longest river and flows entirely within China. It rises on the Tibetan Plateau, crosses central China and reaches the East China Sea near Shanghai.

The river supports major cities, farming and transport. Three Gorges Dam created a vast reservoir and altered flow, sediment movement and aquatic habitat across a heavily used system.

18. Ganges River

The Ganges begins in the Himalayas and crosses northern India before joining the Brahmaputra-Meghna delta system. It holds profound religious importance for Hindu communities.

Its basin supports a very large population, intensifying demands on water quality and flow. The shared delta spreads across India and Bangladesh before meeting the Bay of Bengal.

19. Great Salt Lake

Utah’s Great Salt Lake is a terminal lake with no outlet to the sea. USGS monitoring tracks a system where water leaves mainly through evaporation, concentrating salts delivered by tributaries.

Lake area changes dramatically with inflow and drought. Exposed lakebed can become a dust source, while islands and shallow bays support brine shrimp and migratory birds.

20. English Channel

The English Channel separates southern England from northern France and links the Atlantic with the North Sea through the Strait of Dover. It is a narrow passage on one of the world’s busiest maritime routes.
