Maine’s official lake-depth charts are collected in the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Lake Survey Maps directory. Search by water name, town or county, then open the survey sheet for contours, access points and fishery information. Maine DEP’s lake-data mapper can add monitoring stations and environmental context.
The charts are valuable general references, especially for understanding basin shape. They are not guaranteed navigation products. Survey age, sounding density and lake level differ among maps, so every numerical reading should begin with the sheet’s notes and scale.
Many Maine survey sheets combine a contour map with written biological information. Readers should separate the durable geographic observation from management notes that can age. The bottom basin usually changes slowly, while fisheries regulations and stocking decisions can change much faster.
Finding a Maine lake survey map
The official Maine IFW Lake Survey Maps page provides a searchable statewide table. It lists waterbody name, management region, municipalities and counties. Those fields help distinguish repeated names and lakes that extend across town or county boundaries.
Each chart uses bathymetric contours, lines of constant depth that function like topographic contours on land. IFW explains that darker colors represent deeper water and closely spaced lines mark steep drop-offs. Many sheets also identify public access and principal fisheries.
Confirm the exact waterbody before downloading. Maine has many ponds with similar names and unorganized territories may be identified by township codes rather than familiar towns. County, township and map location together are more reliable than the name alone.
The IFW table also assigns a North or South management region. That field is administrative context, not a statement about which half of a lake the chart covers. Read the municipalities column when a lake crosses a boundary.
How to read the bathymetric chart
Begin with the legend and contour interval. If lines represent ten-foot steps, a point between the 20- and 30-foot contours cannot be assigned an exact depth from the chart. Closed contours with increasing values toward the center indicate a hole; lines that crowd together reveal a sharp descent.
A maximum depth is only the deepest mapped point or interpreted contour. It does not describe the typical lake floor. A waterbody can have one compact 80-foot basin surrounded by broad shallows, while another of the same maximum depth may remain deep across much of its area.

Depth shading can simplify a complicated basin, but it must be read through the legend. A darker patch may represent an entire band such as 40 to 60 feet. Color does not supply an exact sounding where no printed contour or measurement exists.
What survey age and method mean
Bathymetric charts are built from depth soundings collected along routes across a lake. Mapmakers draw contours between those measured points. Sparse tracks leave more room for interpolation and small bottom features between tracks may be absent.
Scanning a paper chart preserves it and makes it easier to find, but a digital file is not necessarily a modern survey. Shorelines can change, sediment can collect near inlets and beaver activity may alter small ponds. Readers should look for survey dates and explanatory notes printed on the original sheet.
Water depth also varies with lake stage. A contour’s reference may represent the water surface during the survey or a specified elevation. Drought, heavy rainfall and managed drawdowns change the water above a stable bottom. Mixing maps created with different references can introduce an apparent depth error.
Some Maine charts include written survey notes and fishery observations from the time of fieldwork. They are historical evidence, not automatic descriptions of the present fish community. Current IFW regulations and survey updates take precedence where they differ.
Scale governs positional confidence. A small statewide locator map cannot accurately place a boat along a contour. Even a detailed chart inherits uncertainty from the original shoreline and sounding positions.
Adding Maine DEP water-quality information
Maine DEP’s lake sample-station layer maps monitoring sites and identifies whether a station represents a lake’s deep hole. Its attributes include basin, station number, depth and location information. This is separate from the IFW chart, but the two resources can be read together.
The Maine DEP monitoring portal explains the state’s broader water-quality work. Transparency, oxygen, nutrients and algal conditions require direct measurements. Bathymetry only supplies the physical setting in which those variables change.
Deep water can stratify in summer, leaving a warm surface layer above colder bottom water. Oxygen may fall in the deep basin even where surface water appears clear. This is why a contour cannot establish swimming safety, drinking-water quality or fish habitat by itself.
Maine DEP also participates in lake trend monitoring with partner organizations. Measurements collected repeatedly at a consistent station are useful for detecting change, while a one-time depth survey describes relatively stable basin geometry. Time series and bathymetry should not be conflated.
Argo’s list of clear Maine lakes addresses visibility, a related but distinct subject. Clear water can still contain hazards that cannot be seen, while naturally colored water can support a healthy ecosystem.
Fishing uses and limits
Contours help locate shelves, channels and steep breaks. Those features influence temperature and habitat, but they do not guarantee fish presence. Species needs, seasonal movement, oxygen and food availability determine whether a promising shape is productive.
IFW survey sheets may list principal fisheries, yet regulations can change after a map was published. Anglers should consult current Maine fishing rules and advisories. A legacy sheet remains geographic context rather than a complete current management document.
The current Maine fishing laws answer legal questions that the survey map cannot. The distinction is especially important when a scanned sheet lists a species or access point from an earlier management period.
Never treat a lake survey map as the sole navigation authority. It may omit rocks, submerged timber, cables, docks or hazards between sounding lines. Direct observation and current local boating information remain necessary.
A dependable workflow
Search IFW by name, then verify town and county. Read the chart’s survey date, scale, contour interval and water-level reference. Record the official maximum only with those qualifications. If a precise modern depth is necessary, seek newer georeferenced data or make an appropriate direct measurement.
Next, open DEP information for monitoring context. Match records by waterbody identity and station rather than assuming the deepest plotted point is the same as a water-quality station. Preserve source links when citing either dataset.
A DEP deep-hole station may sit near the deepest mapped basin because that location captures seasonal stratification. It still represents one sampling point. Nearshore conditions require their own observations, especially where tributaries, beaches or development influence the water.
When a chart is printed, verify that the page has not been scaled to fit. The graphical scale bar remains usable after proportional resizing, while a stated ratio may not. Digital measurement should rely on georeferenced source data rather than distances taken from a screenshot.
IFW’s directory is Maine’s state source for bathymetric charts. Survey date, contour method and available companion datasets determine how far each chart can support a particular question. If no chart appears, contact IFW or check whether the waterbody is filed under an alternate name. Absence from the directory should be reported honestly; it does not justify copying an unlabeled map from a commercial app.
