North Dakota’s official lake contour maps are available through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. Its Fishing Waters Viewer combines bathymetric contours with access and fisheries information, while many waters also have printable PDF maps. The department describes the resource as fishing-waters maps that include lake contours; it does not claim that every lake in the state has a completed depth survey.

Start at the agency’s map index or Where to Fish application, search for the waterbody and open the available contour product. The viewer is better for interactive exploration. A PDF is easier to save for offline reference and usually provides a fixed legend, contour interval and survey context.

These products show general lakebed form. They should not be treated as navigation charts. Water levels fluctuate, winter ice changes and small hazards may fall below the survey or map resolution.

Find the official viewer and PDFs

The Game and Fish map index lists the Fishing Waters Viewer as an interactive product containing lake contours. It also links the Where to Fish application and a statewide fishing-waters poster. The poster gives broad geographic orientation; the contour viewer supplies local depth detail where it exists.

The agency’s open-water fishing page directs readers to interactive and printable fishing-water maps. Its resource list includes contour maps, stocking information and fisheries status updates. Access details may appear alongside them, which lets a reader connect bottom shape with a practical launch or shore location.

Search by the lake’s official name and confirm the county. North Dakota contains repeated or similar waterbody names and reservoirs may be known locally by a dam name. The location shown on the map is a better identity check than a search-result title alone.

What the contour map service proves

The seed map service is identified as ND Game and Fish Lake Bathymetry. It connects to a North Dakota GIS Hub ArcGIS service and exposes a Lake Contours layer. The copyright statement names the Game and Fish Department and the ND GIS Hub.

This technical page confirms that contours are an operational layer in the official viewer. It does not provide a plain-language promise of statewide completeness, a universal contour interval or one survey date for every lake. Those details belong to the selected waterbody’s map and metadata.

The Fishing Waters Viewer description likewise says the application contains fishing-water maps including lake contours. Use the interactive map to find available coverage rather than inferring it from the service’s statewide extent. An ArcGIS service can cover North Dakota while containing features for only the surveyed lakes.

Map services may cache images at a series of scales, so the linework can disappear when the viewer is zoomed too far out. Search and select the lake before deciding coverage is absent. The service confirms the data provider, while the lake-specific product supplies the useful contour labels.

Reading a printable contour map

A PDF such as the official Fish Creek Dam map shows how the products are structured. Its legend includes three-foot contours and colored depth bands, plus symbols for the ramp and other facilities. The map also states a maximum depth for that specific waterbody.

A contour line connects mapped positions with the same depth. Closely spaced lines indicate a steep underwater slope, while broad spacing marks a gentler slope. Color bands simplify the pattern into depth ranges. Read the numeric labels when an exact band boundary is important.

Closed contours require context. Values that increase inward can outline a depression; values that decrease inward can mark a hump. A submerged stream channel often appears as a winding sequence of deeper contours through a reservoir. Points and bays on the shoreline may correspond with underwater slopes, but their shape alone does not establish depth.

Scale controls what the sheet can show. Enlarging a PDF makes the symbols bigger without increasing survey resolution. Small rocks, recent sediment deposits and isolated hazards may be absent even when the contour pattern is detailed.

Why contour intervals differ among lakes

The Fish Creek example uses a three-foot interval, but readers should not assume that interval applies everywhere. Survey design responds to the size, depth and bottom complexity of each waterbody. A shallow prairie lake may need smaller vertical steps to reveal useful relief. A deep reservoir can be legible with a wider interval.

Map age also affects appearance. Sonar systems and positioning methods have improved, while older surveys may rely on more widely spaced tracks. Cartographers interpolate contour lines between soundings. A line therefore represents the best supported interpretation of equal depth, not a continuous chain of direct measurements.

Printed maps should retain their legend and scale. A depth color without its range can be misread and a facility icon can be confused with a bottom feature when the key is cropped away. The map date belongs with any saved copy because waterbody access and conditions can change.

Water-level reference is equally important. Managed reservoirs and closed-basin prairie lakes can change substantially. A contour map may depict depth at a stated pool or survey level. Actual water above the bottom can differ when the lake surface rises or falls.

Prairie hydrology can change the shoreline

Many North Dakota basins have limited surface outlets and wet or dry periods can expand or contract their water area. A lake contour map captures the bottom form, yet the visible shoreline may move across that form as water level changes. An access site shown beside water during one period can sit farther from the edge during another.

Wind also affects local depth on broad shallow lakes. It can push water toward one shore and lower it along another. A static map cannot represent this temporary setup. Ice, vegetation and suspended sediment create other seasonal conditions that are outside a bathymetric survey’s purpose.

Closed-basin expansion can flood land beyond the shoreline shown in an older base image. The submerged topography may still be broadly informative, but the visible edge and access route require newer information. Conversely, declining water can expose mapped shallow contours as dry ground.

Use contours for planning, not guaranteed clearance

Anglers can use contour maps to recognize main basins, channel edges and flats. The maps also help explain why water temperature or fish habitat differs across a lake. Those are broad spatial questions suited to bathymetry.

Safe boat operation requires more. Check current access notices and water conditions, follow buoys and maintain appropriate speed. A contour map cannot report a floating object, newly exposed obstruction or changing ice. Mobile GPS position also has uncertainty that is independent of the source survey.

Download the official PDF when one is available, preserve its legend and note its date. In the interactive viewer, confirm the exact lake before reading the contour labels. What to do when no contour appears

An empty bathymetry layer usually means the viewer has no published contour features for that waterbody at the chosen scale. Zoom in once and verify that the lake is correctly selected. If contours remain absent, do not substitute a user-made map without checking its source.

Game and Fish fisheries-status information may still provide waterbody facts and access details. Contacting the agency is appropriate when a contour survey is essential to a research or management project. Record any data date and usage conditions that accompany a file supplied outside the public viewer.

The official system is most useful when its limits stay visible. It offers strong, lake-specific bathymetry for numerous fishing waters without proving universal coverage. Matching each map to its lake, legend and reference level produces a sounder interpretation than relying on a generic statewide image.
