A 2,559-person study links cleaner, more reliable water with greater happiness in China, while pollution weakens the association

Cleaner water and dependable supplies were associated with greater happiness among people in China, according to research that combined personal views with provincial environmental records. The results also suggest that heavy pollution can reduce the emotional benefit linked with believing local water is clean.

The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology on January 13, 2026, examined 2,559 adults living across 19 Chinese provinces. Researchers Fuxiang Yu, Chuntian Lu and Zhengbing Guo compared survey answers about happiness and local water conditions with official figures covering pollution, treatment and water supplies.

Scientists often use the term blue space for environments dominated by visible water, including rivers, lakes, wetlands, canals, reservoirs and coastlines. Much earlier work has examined whether people benefit from living near water. The new analysis looked deeper, asking whether water cleanliness and reliable availability were also linked with happiness.

How researchers compared water and happiness

Fuxiang Yu and colleagues used information from the Chinese General Social Survey, a national research program administered by the National Survey Research Center at Renmin University of China. The team selected responses from the survey’s 2021 wave, then removed records that lacked key information. The final sample included 2,559 people aged 18 to 94.

Participants answered a broad question about how happy they felt with their lives. Their responses were grouped into four ordered levels, ranging from unhappy to very happy. About 57 percent described themselves as relatively happy, while a further 24 percent selected very happy. Nearly 13 percent gave a neutral response and about 6 percent were placed in the unhappy group.

The survey also asked how much water pollution had affected each person’s community during the previous 12 months. Answers created a measure of perceived water quality. Another question asked how serious freshwater shortages were in the local area, giving the team a measure of perceived water sufficiency.

Researchers connected those answers with province-level indicators from the China Statistical Yearbook. The records included ammonia nitrogen emissions as an indicator of pollution and the share of wastewater receiving treatment. They also included groundwater supply and total surface water resources.

Because individual participants were grouped within provinces, the team used a method called multilevel ordered logistic regression for the water-quality analysis. In simple terms, the method tested whether water conditions were associated with movement toward a higher happiness category, while accounting for personal factors and differences among provinces.

Cleaner water perceptions tracked with higher happiness

People who viewed their local water as cleaner were more likely to report higher happiness. The statistical link remained after researchers accounted for age, physical health, household economic position, marital status, education and several other personal characteristics.

A clean-looking river or lake may support feelings of safety and calm. Water that appears polluted can raise concerns about disease, unpleasant odors, damaged wildlife, or unsafe food and drinking supplies. Even when people do not enter the water, its condition can influence how they judge the wider place where they live.

The relationship also fits the biophilia hypothesis, which proposes that humans have a deep tendency to seek connections with nature. Blue spaces may offer visual movement, reflected light, cooler surroundings and places for rest. Their restorative value is likely to depend partly on whether people experience them as safe and healthy.

Perceived water sufficiency carried a similar positive association. Respondents who believed their communities had enough freshwater tended to report greater happiness. Reliable water can reduce worries about household needs, farming, local employment and future shortages, although the study did not measure each of those pathways directly.

Pollution weakened the benefit people reported

Provincial pollution records changed the relationship between personal perceptions and happiness. When ammonia nitrogen emissions were low, better perceived water quality had a clear positive association with happiness. At high emission levels, the relationship became weak and statistically uncertain.

Ammonia nitrogen can enter waterways through sewage, agriculture and industrial discharges. High levels can reduce water quality and disturb aquatic life. The study used total provincial emissions as a broad measure of pollution pressure rather than as a reading of the water beside each participant’s home.

The paper’s abstract summarizes the result directly: “The positive effect of perceived water quality on happiness weakens in provinces with higher levels of pollution.” Objective environmental damage may therefore limit the emotional gains associated with a favorable local view.

One possible explanation involves signals that people receive beyond their immediate neighborhood. Residents may see reports of polluted rivers, notice damaged habitats, or encounter problems farther from home. Provincial pollution can also affect livelihoods and public confidence. The analysis identified the statistical interaction, while the exact psychological pathway remains open for future research.

Wastewater treatment carried a positive link

A higher wastewater treatment rate was associated with greater happiness at the provincial level. Treatment plants remove pollutants from used water before it returns to rivers and other parts of the environment. Effective treatment can lower health risks and improve the appearance and smell of nearby waterways.

Visible improvements may also influence how residents judge local management. Cleaner waterways, fewer pollution incidents and functioning treatment facilities can provide signs that public institutions are protecting environmental quality. The survey did not directly test trust in government, so that explanation remains a possible mechanism rather than a measured result.

The researchers reported an average provincial wastewater treatment rate of about 96.8 percent in the areas included in the analysis. Differences between provinces were fairly small compared with differences in pollution emissions, yet the treatment rate still carried a positive statistical association in the main water-quality models.

Water policy therefore has a possible social dimension alongside its ecological and health goals. Infrastructure that collects and treats wastewater may support daily wellbeing when it produces conditions that residents can see and experience. Continued pollution controls remain important because favorable perceptions lost much of their positive link in provinces with heavier emissions.

Groundwater and surface water produced different results

Groundwater supply showed a strong positive association with happiness. Water stored below the surface can provide a steady source for homes, cities and farms, especially when rainfall changes across the seasons. A dependable supply may give communities greater security during dry periods.

Perceived sufficiency followed the same general direction. People who felt that freshwater shortages were less serious tended to place themselves in higher happiness categories. Together, the subjective and objective findings suggest that reliability may carry social value, though the study cannot determine whether water supply itself caused the reported happiness.

Surface water resources produced a negative association in the statistical models. Provinces with larger measured volumes tended to have lower happiness after the included personal and environmental factors were considered. The result also remained in sensitivity tests that removed provinces with unusually high surface water totals.

The two indicators describe different parts of water availability. Groundwater supply measures water delivered from underground reserves for use. Total surface water resources describe a province’s broader natural water endowment, which may include flows and volumes that are difficult to control or distribute. A large total can therefore exist alongside local shortages, flood exposure, or limited access to usable water.

Why abundant surface water may bring risks

Large rivers and heavy seasonal flows can support cities and ecosystems, yet they can also raise flood danger when drainage, storage and protective infrastructure cannot manage the volume. Flooding can damage homes and crops, interrupt transport, contaminate supplies and create long periods of financial stress.

Regional totals also say little about where water is located or when it arrives. A province may receive abundant water during a short wet season and face scarcity during other months. Mountain rivers, floodwater and polluted lakes may add to the measured total while providing limited dependable water for daily use.

The negative coefficient should therefore be treated as a clue rather than proof that surface water reduces happiness. The researchers proposed flooding, poor drainage and inefficient management as possible explanations. Their dataset did not include local flood histories, household access, water prices, or detailed measures of river usability.

Management quality may help explain why the amount of water alone gives an incomplete picture. Reservoirs, drainage channels, flood-warning networks and careful allocation can make seasonal flows safer and more useful. Local ecological conditions also influence whether a river provides recreation and beauty or creates concern about pollution and hazards.

What the study can and cannot establish

The analysis offers a cross-sectional snapshot based on survey responses collected in 2021. It can identify relationships among water conditions, perceptions and happiness at that time. Causal direction remains uncertain because happier people may judge their surroundings more positively, while unmeasured local conditions could influence both water perceptions and wellbeing.

Each central personal measure came from a single survey question. Happiness is complex and people may interpret response categories differently. Perceived blue-space quality was based on reported community exposure to water pollution, while perceived quantity came from views about freshwater shortage. The questions did not measure how often participants visited rivers, lakes, or other blue spaces.

Provincial indicators also cover very large areas. Water conditions can differ sharply between neighborhoods within the same province and a province-wide pollution total may not represent an individual’s closest waterway. Future studies could combine household surveys with local monitoring stations, satellite observations and maps of access to water environments.

Long-term research could follow the same people before and after treatment plants open, polluted waterways are restored, or water supplies change. Such designs would give researchers a stronger basis for testing cause and effect. Interviews could also reveal whether safety, recreation, trust, reduced scarcity concerns, or local employment provide the main links with happiness.

The indexed research record describes an association with several practical implications. Cleaner water, effective treatment and dependable supplies may support public wellbeing alongside their established environmental value. The results also suggest that water abundance delivers greater social benefits when communities can use it safely and rely on it throughout the year.
