**Lake Edward** lies on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the western branch of the East African Rift. It sits just south of the equator, between Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park and Congo's Virunga National Park. The lake's setting places open water, rift escarpments and some of Africa's richest protected wildlife habitat within one connected landscape.

Modern scientific and international lake references commonly give an area of about **2,325 square kilometers**, with roughly 71 percent in Congo and 29 percent in Uganda. Some fisheries-management documents use a smaller 1,940-square-kilometer working area and a different jurisdictional split. The lake stands roughly 916 meters above sea level. Its deepest water lies toward the steep Congolese side, where reported maximum depth reaches about **117 meters**. The Ugandan side rises more gradually beneath the surface toward the broad savanna of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

## Where Lake Edward is located

Lake Edward occupies a basin between the Rwenzori Mountains to the north and the Virunga volcanic region to the south. The international boundary runs through the lake. Uganda's shoreline forms the eastern sector, while Congo holds most of the western and southern water.

Its deepest trench is close to the western shoreline. There the underwater slope follows the abrupt rift escarpment, reaching a reported maximum of 117 meters. East of the trench, the bottom climbs toward Uganda across a much longer and gentler gradient.

Older sources may list other areas or average depths. Lake level, mapping methods and the boundary chosen for shallow shoreline water can affect the result. For a general geographic description, an area near 2,000 square kilometers and a maximum depth near 117 meters convey the scale without implying false precision.

## Rivers and the Kazinga Channel

The Rutshuru and Rwindi rivers bring water from the volcanic highlands south of the lake. The Ishasha enters from the east, while the Nyamugasani drains part of the Rwenzori region. These tributaries deliver runoff and sediment from sharply different elevations.

The **Kazinga Channel** extends roughly 32 kilometers between Lake George and Lake Edward. Its shores concentrate animals during dry periods, making the channel one of Queen Elizabeth National Park's best-known wildlife-viewing areas. Hydrologically, its annual contribution may be smaller than the combined river inflow, but its ecological role is conspicuous.

Water exits Lake Edward at Ishango through the Semliki River. The outflow begins as a fast, clear stream before continuing north across the rift valley. The Semliki eventually reaches Lake Albert, from which water continues into the Albert Nile.

## Hippos, crocodiles and shoreline mammals

Hippopotamuses use the shallow margins and connecting channel, spending hot daylight hours in water before feeding on land. Their movements transfer nutrients between grassland and aquatic habitat. In high concentrations, that input can affect oxygen and water chemistry in localized areas.

**Nile crocodiles** occupy shorelines and channels where fish and other prey are available. Visitors see them most reliably from managed park excursions rather than by approaching the water independently. Large wild animals can be dangerous at distances that may seem safe to an inexperienced observer.

Elephants, buffalo and antelope range through the parks around the lake. Queen Elizabeth National Park is also known for lions in the Ishasha sector. Many mammals are not lake animals in a strict sense, yet the lake and its wetlands provide drinking water or productive feeding habitat that helps support the surrounding terrestrial community.

## Birds of the Lake Edward basin

The mix of open water, marsh and savanna supports a diverse bird community. Pelicans and cormorants feed around productive water, while herons work shallow edges. African fish eagles watch from elevated perches and take fish near the surface.

Migratory birds add seasonal change. The larger Queen Elizabeth landscape has recorded hundreds of species because its habitats range from wetland to forest and highland. A birder near the Kazinga Channel can encounter waterbirds and raptors within the same field of view.

Bird abundance depends on fish availability and the condition of shoreline nesting or roosting sites. Disturbance, water pollution and changes in fishing pressure can travel through the food web. Protecting the lake therefore supports more than the conspicuous mammals seen from boats.

## Fish and fishing communities

Tilapia are central to Lake Edward's fisheries. Catfish, lungfish and barbs also occur, with species composition varying by habitat and survey. Fishing supports communities on both sides of the border and supplies an important source of protein and income.

The lake's fishery operates within protected areas and across an international boundary, which makes management difficult. Illegal gear and excessive fishing pressure can reduce stocks, while insecurity has sometimes limited monitoring on the Congolese side. Rules and enforcement capacity do not remain identical around the whole shore.

Lake Edward illustrates how conservation and livelihoods occupy the same water. Excluding people entirely would ignore long-established communities, while uncontrolled harvest would weaken the ecosystem on which those communities depend. Durable management requires shared data and cooperation across the border.

## Volcanoes and rift geology

The lake basin exists because East Africa's crust is being pulled apart. Faulting lowered blocks of crust and raised steep shoulders beside them. The western escarpment and deep trench are visible expressions of that rift structure.

Volcanic terrain lies close to the south around the Virunga Mountains. Ash and lava have altered drainage through time. Crater lakes east of Lake Edward record further volcanic activity within the Queen Elizabeth landscape.

## A protected lake under pressure

Two internationally significant parks surround much of Lake Edward, but a park boundary cannot isolate the water from conditions upstream. Agricultural runoff, erosion and settlement in the drainage basin can reach tributaries. Fishing pressure and political instability add direct challenges.

Oil development proposals in the wider region have also raised concern about habitat disturbance and spill risk. Roads can fragment terrestrial habitat even when construction remains away from open water. Environmental assessment must account for the connected lake, river and wetland system.

Lake Edward remains a productive African Great Lake with remarkable wildlife around its shores. Its geography explains much of that richness: mountain runoff feeds a rift basin, the Kazinga Channel links another lake and protected lands preserve long stretches of habitat. Keeping those connections functional is the central conservation task.
